30 July 2026Where Sydney Mum Began
Before there was Social Gain, there was Sydney Mum.
From 2010 to 2018, I ran an independent digital media platform called SydneyMum.com.au. It started as a simple idea: what if we celebrated the extraordinary things ordinary mothers were doing? What if we profiled the artists, the charity founders, the career-changers, the health advocates — not despite their motherhood, but because of it?
Over 8 years, that simple idea grew into something much bigger.
363 articles. 144,000 words. A podcast. A contributor network of 11 health and wellbeing practitioners. Partnerships with Variety, the Cancer Council, Can Too, Red Cross, and WEAVE. Coverage of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Gold Week, and countless local community initiatives.
We profiled documentary filmmakers who took their children to India. Artists with galleries in New York and London. A woman who organised Christmas parties for 5,000 children with special needs. Yoga teachers, nutritionists, financial advisors, speech pathologists, and everyday mothers who simply refused to be defined by one thing.
Sydney Mum taught me everything.
It taught me that the best stories are already in the room — you just need to ask. It taught me that consistency builds trust, and that trust builds movements. It taught me that community media isn’t about clicks or algorithms — it’s about curiosity, care, and showing up.
Every project Social Gain runs today carries DNA from Sydney Mum. The same instinct to platform the overlooked. The same belief in the power of a good story. The same understanding that community starts with curiosity.
This category is where those stories live now. Some are from 2010. Some from 2017. All of them still matter.
Welcome to the Sydney Mum archive.
